So, as we are reunited with Special Agent Clarice Starling a year after the events of The Silence of the Lambs, only Buffalo Bill – the killer who skinned his victims and who Lecter helped Clarice capture – was directly referenced. The serial killer played by Anthony Hopkins in the movies and Mads Mikkelsen in the NBC show apparently cannot, for contractual reasons to do with the rights to Harris’s books, be referred to by name. Whereas Bryan Fuller’s NBC series Hannibal evolved into something weird and wonderful, Clarice already looks set to become a standard police procedural CSI with Hannibal Lecter trappings. Clarice is the second television spin-off from the Thomas Harris novel The Silence of the Lambs and its 1991 film adaptation.
